You've just been toasted!!

Several days ago, my good friend Emer got married, and I was once again given the honor of being best man, which meant that I had to give yet another speech! (Gee, thanks a lot dude!) :P

Luckily, I'm no stranger to the task, having put together a wedding toast once before for Regan and Shiela's wedding.

This toast may seem a bit similar to the original since I followed the same format and only made it A FEW HOURS before the wedding. :P

I knew posting the speech online would come in handy if ever I needed to make a toast again! Hehehe!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good evening everyone. On Mimi and Emer’s behalf, I would like to thank you for coming together to celebrate this special event with them. My name is Brian, and as one of Emerson’s closest friends, I have been given the special honor of speaking before you here today as the Best Man.

Before anything else, I would also like to thank the parents of the bride and groom for their generosity, to everybody who tirelessly worked to make all of this possible, to Mimi for generously taking my friend off our hands :P, and to Emer, for once again validating that among the guys, I am the best man! :P

No wedding toast would be complete without a peek back into the groom’s life when he was younger. Emerson has been my classmate in Xavier from the 1st to the 7th grade. During that span of time, we became very good friends as we put together a barkada of sorts that still congregates to this very day on our occasional Boys’ Night Out. As I can recall, Emer was always the clown of our group when we were kids.
His pleasant demeanor and well-timed jokes often turned sour situations into barrels of laughter. He was a friend with whom you could talk to about basically everything under the sun, from cartoons to rubber shoes, to even secrets and insecurities

Family and loyalty were also his strong points, being a dutiful and loving son to his parents, a caring and protective ahia to his sisters, and an extremely reliable buddy to his peers. These character traits show you what kind of person he really is. Eventually, we grew up and went our separate ways in college and beyond, but have remained in close contact through the years, with the boys getting together whenever Emer was in town.

When Emerson told us that he was getting married, we naturally wanted to meet this woman of his dreams whom he has fallen head over heels for. I remember that night when the group was introduced to Mimi. She struck me as a very sincere and kindhearted lady with a wonderful sense of humor, who just seemed to “click” with Emer. We knew right then and there that they were perfect for each other. Fast forward a few months, and here we are..

Still, I’m not one to give any advice on marriage, now being the lone bachelor of the group :(, but I’ll reinterate what I may have said once before, that “any relationship, especially a marriage, is all about sacrifices and learning. It won't always be fun and games, but as long as you're willing to compromise for each other and take time to talk and figure each other out, you'll never go wrong.”

With that, I would like to invite everyone to stand up and join me in raising their glasses as we toast the newlyweds. To Emer and Mimi, I wish you guys all the best in a long and happy marriage, and may you have the grandest time of your lives while you’re at it! Cheers! :D

Bespectacled

Last week, I finally decided to have my eyes checked out (well, it was the second time really, but I feel that the first consult doesn't count. More on that later)

I had actually been suffering from blurred vision in my left eye for some time now, but I guess it was only lately that it became pronounced enough to will me to finally do something about it. Come to think of it, my eyes have been getting easily fatigued lately, resulting in less productive nocturnal study sessions.

Since my first ophtha consult didn't go very well, I texted one of my former CSMC interns (who is now a 1st year Ophtha resident. Hi Maui!) for a good recommendation.

After being pointed in the right direction, I set off to go back to the hospital I had at one time considered home. I had a bit of time to kill, so I met up with some former IM batchmates and a few of my former clerks (who are now interns) to catch up on the latest news. Oh yeah congratulations to the CSMC IM team who won at the recently concluded PCP quiz! I'm proud of you guys, especially since I heard you really kicked the ass of a particular team. ;)

Going back to the initial story.. I waited patiently at the clinic of DR. FRANCISCO GOMEZ (Thanks doc!), luckily I had arrived early and only had a couple of patients ahead of me.

After an exhaustive ophthalmologic examination, the good doctor told me that I really had hyperopia of the L eye and it was no wonder that previous examiners told me that my L eye was "lazy". I had once thought of wearing an eyepatch over it (as I had seen in Peanuts comics), but common sense got in the way. :P

Needless to say, the doc wrote me off a prescription for corrective lenses, and seeing how much my vision had improved as he was trying lenses on me, I was pretty excited to get myself a pair.

Normally, a person would be hassled by the need to wear glasses, but I guess my flawed eyesight was enough motivation to supersede any desire to be glasses-free.

I browsed through the frames available at his clinic and saw one I fancied. It was a "rimless" frame, and it cost 2000 Php! Bear in mind that this price was not yet inclusive of the lens itself, which ranged from 500Php for plain uncoated lenses, to about 4-5k for those fancy-ass "Transitions" lenses which darkened when exposed to bright light.

The secretary suggested that I go out and buy a frame of my own choosing then just come back to have the lenses done, which I did. I first looked around the malls to see what the optical shops had to offer. It was really annoying when all these optical shop personnel gang up on you and offer you their most expensive frames, only to apparently show a hint of disgust when you ask to see their "affordable" frames. (Ano ba naman ang gagawin ko sa 25K na eyeglass frame diba??)

With malls out of the picture, my dad suggested I accompany him downtown to check out those wholesalers to get a frame with a good price. He initially wanted me to get a frame similar to his, which cost only 100 Php! He had this great (and surprisingly feasible) idea of buying multiple identical frames so that all I have to do is move the lens when the old frame broke down.

It seemed like a good plan, until we got to the sellers. The really cheap frames were too small and thus hurt the sides of my face when I wore them. (I think those were for children). After an exhaustive search, we came upon this store which sold the one I have now. It was lightweight, and of the right fit! And it only cost 1K (A nearby optical store was selling a similar frame for 1.5K). Thus the deal was done. I hurried home and dropped off the frame at the doctor's office. The secretary told me to come back the following day (today) for pickup. I was actually quite surprised that it would be done that quickly. Nevertheless, here I am now, newly bespectacled and seeing much better than before (and without looking like a total nerd either) :D

Well, that didn't work..

Apparently, my previous attempt to revive my blogging streak failed miserably. So, I'm gonna inject another "shot in the arm" which would hopefully get things moving better this time around..

  • Leaving for a med mission in a while. I was invited by my former clerks in UST (who are now interns btw. Congrats kids! :P) for an overnight stay at Cavite to help out at a clerk-organized parish based medical mission. I guess I need this to stay sharp and keep myself positive. Hopefully good things would follow..
  • Speaking of missions, there's another one after Holy Week, the venue much farther off. Will probably bring a camera for that one. :P
  • The NBA playoffs are now in full swing. The matchups are actually pretty good. This year has me rooting once again for the Celtics. I just wonder how they'll do for this run after trading away Perkins. They're up 2-0 against the Knicks though.
  • Was finally able to take my sweet inspiration to see Serendra and the surrounding area. We sure can't afford to live there, but its definitely a nice place to visit. :P
  • I finally decided to get on with my life and enrolled myself at a gym. 1st session was a laugh though, as I exerted myself too much and had an episode of near-syncope (although my brother contends that I really had passed out). Subsequent visits were much better though. :P
  • Had the privilege of being treated to an overnight stay at Fontana there in Subic. The accomodations were pretty much the same as what I had seen when I visited a few years back, but I feel that the place had a bit more "sleazy" feel to it since it was taken over by a Chinese(?) casino company. I guess since the place had become more open to the public, it kinda lost its air of exclusivity
  • Oh yeah, congratulations to all the graduates of batch 2011, Particularly to those kids from ADMU and the MDs of UST! (And of course the latest crop of Stallions to leave the stables. Luceat Lux!)
  • I find myself a godfather for the second time over, although the child in question hasn't been baptized yet as she was just born a couple of weeks ago. :D
That's all for now. I PROMISE to write when I get back. I think this is something I really need to keep on doing in order to help myself heal.. ;)

My Best Friend's Wedding

Regan and Shiela (7-3-2010)

Yeah, I know its a cheesy, title, but one that says it all. :P

It has been more than three weeks since Reg and Shiela were wed, and I know this entry is waaaay overdue. I guess I'll try to make up for it by writing a worthwhile entry then.

After viewing their on-site video here to jog my memory, I'm now prepared to sit my ass down and churn out a story worthy of the occasion.

Reg told me the good news as early as October last year (I think), and made mention that I had to make a small speech, which I learned was supposed to be a wedding toast. (see related post). Not bad for something made only 3 days before despite already being informed for about half a year. :P

Although I was no stranger to participation in weddings, having been ring-bearer a couple of times and had stints as a veil and cord sponsor, this was the first time I was to become a Best Man. I have to admit that  I had absolutely no idea with what the best man does, as the duties may vary from wedding to wedding depending on the preference of the couple. I guess I did ok though, as the event went with barely a hitch. :D

An added treat to this momentous occasion was that Reg actually made allowances for me and the bro to bring our respective dates! :D

The day started off quite well, with me zooming off to fetch my from girlfriend her home to have her hair and makeup done with mom at the nearby salon. We were a little pressed for time since the wedding would be starting at around 1pm. While waiting for the girls, we ordered delivery to save time. Brother arrived with his own date after a short while. They made it back at the nick of time, barely ate anything, and we were off!

Although the weather seemed to be cooperating despite the rainy season, the heat proved to be a little too much as we were unfortunately crammed into a vehicle with a malfunctioning aircon.. :( Good thing the traffic along EDSA wasn't really that bad at the time, otherwise I think we'd have melted even before we got to the church. Once at the venue, bro and the girls settled down while me and the folks (they were there as godparents) found our places in line... Well, not really. As is typical of weddings, people were milling about every which way. It was a treat to see some of the "brothers" there, all dressed up to see our childhood friend tie the knot. :P

When we were finally lined up, I was told that I was the first in the procession! This kinda took my by surprise as I didn't know the best man walked first. :P Hmm.. I guess that's why he's considered the "best" right? Hahaha I'm funny.. :P

I remember hearing from somewhere that one of the jobs of the Best Man is to help the groom not lose his nerve before the wedding, or something like that. Throughout the entire procession, I was trying my best to ease the tension by chatting Reg up, and for some weird reason, we wound up talking about American Football, out of all things. :P Though It may seem a little weird for anyone who would overhear, for us it was probably just one of those typical nonsensical conversations we've been having since childhood.

Brothers
(screencap courtesy of their onsite video by Wang Videography)

At some point we got a little sentimental as I reflected on what was going on and how fast life seemed to have gone by. I believe I said something like "Bro, I can't believe that it was just a few years ago we were just kids, and now here we are with you getting hitched. Thanks for the honor of being your best man." to which he replied "Don't sweat it man, besides, wasn't this our agreement all along?" (We had a deal that we would be each other's best man at our respective weddings) Pardon me for being cheesy, but I was really touched by the remark. . Here was my best bud, my "other brother", the one guy outside my own family I would trust with my own life without any hesitation, honoring a promise made probably more than a dozen years ago. I'll be sure to hold up my end of the bargain when my turn comes. :P

Then it was Shiela's turn to walk down the aisle. She looked so radiant in her wedding gown, and I have never seen Reg so happy in my entire life, and I then knew that all was well. :) At one point I think Reg was at the verge of tears himself, as his bride was already shedding tears of joy the moment she stepped through the church doors. I told him to suck it up, or risk looking silly on his wedding day, immortalized forever in pictures and video. That seemed to have worked, as his face seemed to have remained high and dry all throughout. :P

I have to admit that I didn't really pay much attention to the wedding rites, as I was too busy taking it all in. For all the weddings I've been to, this one struck closest to home. If becoming a first-time ninong for Ced's kid was a wake-up call, this one was like a nuclear explosion. We really weren't kids anymore. This was an entirely different stage of life we found ourselves in. The game had finally changed, as we were slowing slipping into the roles which our parents had once assumed long before. Priorities had indeed changed. Goals and aspirations were being adjusted for the long tern. We used to think we could be young forever, but now here we were, embracing change and rising up to the new challenges that life throws our way.

It was like only yesterday when we were obsessing over computer games, wrestling, collectible cards, cartoons, the NBA, anime, and what-have-you. Man, how things have changed,, Now we're preoccupied with earning a living, taking care of kids, making a profit, upholding the constitution, saving lives, etc..

Anyways, after the church ceremonies, we headed back home for a bit of rest before proceeding to the reception. Before the reception proper, there were cocktails which gave me the chance to hang out with the boys. I thought it was great that mom and dad were there since they knew most of them as well, having seen us grow up together.

They had a photobooth at the event, which made the idle time go buy pretty quickly, In my opinion, the photobooth is the greatest wedding innovation since the wedding cake :P since it allowed guests to have more meaningful and personalized souvenirs of the event, a far cry from the classic figurines that used to be given out. More often than not, the figurines wound up taking up space and gathering dust, eventually being thrown out since they were next to useless after a few months anyway.

When the doors opened, everyone shuffled in while the entourage was asked to stay outside for the entrance. Anyway, I found that I was paired up with the matron of honor (Shiela's BFF) who happened to be a Derma pre-res when I was still a clerk , who eventually became the chief resident, and she was ICAn to boot! :P Now at least I have a Derma referral. ;) (Congrats on passing your diplomate exams Dra. Pam!).

To cut a long story short, our table was a riot, save for a certain someone I won't mention, as he was no fun at all. :P In the middle of the proceedings, we snuck out to have another session with the photobooth. Hehehe. Eventually, my turn at the microphonre came for my "Best Man's toast", and my parents say I did quite well. :P Time really does fly when you're having fun, especially when you're commemorating a very happy event in the company of old friends. ;)

Now my "brother" had gone off and married, and I in turn have gained a new "sister" :D Congratulations and best wishes!! :D

Toasterriffic!

A few hours ago,, I had the privilege of being the Best Man at my childhood best friend's wedding. Thus I had to make a wedding toast, which I shall blog now. :P

Report on the event itself to follow..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen. On behalf of the bride and groom, I'd like to thank you all for being part of their special day. For those who don't know me, My name is Brian, and I have the honor of being one of Regan's closest friends.

I'd also like to thank their parents,  Mr. and Mrs. Yuliong and Mr. and Mrs. Lim for their generosity, to evryone who worked hard to make all of this possible, to Shiela for being such a lovely and spirited bride, and to Reg for his generosity of spirit, to finally admit that I am the best man. :D

Regan and I go way back, and we were friends as early as Grade 1 or 2. Despite not being classmates in high school, college, and postgrad, we have remained the very best of friends, with him becoming my godbrother somewhere along the way. Despite not seeing each other for months at a time, we still managed to keep in touch and share a laugh or two over the phone as though nothing has changed. Shows you how loyal Reg is, as our friendship had stood the test of time..

When Regan first introduced me to Sheila (I think this was to see a movie in Shang, right?), I immediately saw why Reg fell in love with her. She was friendly, charming, and very pretty as well. As I watched them interact with each other, I could se that Reg was truly happy to be with her, and I had an inkling that he may have found THE ONE..

Their relationship grew and blossomed, until eventually, Regan told me the good news. The rest, as they say, is history.

Now, I'm not one to give any advice on marriage, seeing as I'm not married.. yet, but I'll say this.. Any relationship, especially a marriage, is all about sacrifices and learning. It won't always be fun, but as long as you're willing to compromise for each other and take time to talk and figure each other out, you'll never go wrong.

Now here's the part where I actually propose a toast. So I'd like to request everybody to please stand up and raise their glasses. To Regan and Shiela, may you live a long blessed life together, filled with love and happiness all the days of your lives. Cheers! :D

What a rush!! (Med boards Aug '09)

Whew! It was like taking the boards all over again..

Just a short while ago, the Professional Regulation Commission (finally) released the list of the names of those who passed the recently concluded Physician Licensure Examinations. While online, I see my friends who are teetering on the edge of madness, desperate for any little bit of news while at the same time dreading the unthinkable.. and since I had a vested interest in this particular examination, I was keeping vigil myself.. :P

The adrenaline rush is just something else! I felt all the anxiety and tension in the air. I was having sleepless nights again as though I was the one upon whom the verdict would be placed. I guess it's a little harder when it's someone you care about, because you feel so helpless.. As I came home from work a while ago, I couldn't focus. I had this queasy feeling in my stomach. My fingers and toes were tingling.. My heart rate shot up when I saw the initial report on the news websites. The results were out. They were ACTUALLY going to come out TONIGHT!! Since it was just an initial report, the list of the board passers was still "to follow".

The results put UST graduates in 6 places among the top 10, including nos 1-3. Overall, there was about a 71% passing rate (1680/2357), which was noticeably higher compared to the last 2 examinations: Feb 09 - 64%; Aug 08 - 60%

So, without further ado, I would like to extend my congratulations to the newly licensed physicians!!  :D

Congratulations Jay and Kathy!

I know this is SUUUUPER late since they've married months ago, and I was only able to congratulate the bride last night. :P

It just got me thinking that among all my clasmmates in MedTech (AMT2003), these two are the only ones to have tied the knot.. although parang may nababalitaan akong hahabol pa.. *wink* :D It really just goes to show that despite all the apparent "coupling" in college, some things just aren't meant to be. (The second couple I mentioned weren't together yet during those years) Everything is truly just up in the air, and I guess there's an element of divine providence when one eventually finds the "right one" for him or her..

Congrats again to the happy couple! :D

*oh, and for those speculating na ako yung involved dun sa 2nd couple, di ko siya naging kaklase sa MedTech, kabatch lang :P

Stallions MD: Congratulations!!!!!!

Taken from a post at the Xavier School website (www.xs.edu.ph)

Two Xaverians Top Medical Board Exam

August 2006 Boards Produces Ten New Doctors

Cesareo U. Tongco II (XS ’97)

The Physician Licensure Examination in August 2006 was topped by two Xaverians. Patrick Leonard G. Co (XS ’96) bested 2,696 examinees from all over the country to emerge as the board topnotcher, #1 overall. Nathaniel L. Yu Chua (XS ’97) also made it to the top ten, he tied for #8 overall. This is probably the first time that a Xaverian has become the #1 board topnotcher, and certainly the first time that two of our own have made it into the top ten.

Eight other Xaverians were among the 1,491 new doctors. These are Ishmael Christian D. Ching (XS ’97), Vicente Francisco Q. Firmalo (XS ’97), Patrick H. How (XS ’96), Rey Emmanuel S. Lu (XS ’97), Fernando A. Melendres Jr. (XS ’97), John Eric N. Tan (XS ’97), Kimberson C. Tanco (XS ’98), and Cesareo Amadeo U. Tongco II (XS ’97). The Oathtaking of the New Physicians was held on Sunday, September 17, 2006 at the PICC Plenary Hall.

Both topnotchers, Patrick Co and Nathaniel Yu Chua, were from UST, as was Kimberson Tanco. Ishmael Ching, Vicente Firmalo, Patrick How, Rey Lu, and Cesareo Tongco II, took Medicine in UERM-MMC. John Eric Tan was from De La Salle - DasmariƱas, while Fernando Melendres studied at UP-PGH.

Luceat Lux!!!
